Q:

What are the different procedures used for valve surgery?

A:

The most common valve surgery uses an open chest procedure, however there is also another newer procedure called TAVI (transcatheter aortic-valve implantation). The TAVI procedure is a percutaneous surgery, which means it is done via needle-puncture of the skin, rather than the open surgery which exposes the organs. Your surgeon will review your medical condition to determine which procedure is best suited to you.

Q:

Can we predict how scoliosis will affect a person over the long term?

A:

There are two main factors that can help determine how scoliosis might affect someone. The first one is the cause of the scoliosis. If the scoliosis is due to an unknown cause (most of the cases), it is generally harmless. On the other hand, if the scoliosis is caused by something dangerous, such as a tumour, this can change the longer-term picture. The other main factor in scoliosis is how fast it is progressing, or worsening.

Q:

How common is asthma?

A:

Asthma is a very common issue affecting the respiratory system of more than 100 million people around the world. The biggest problem with asthma is the flare-ups that can occur, and approximately 50 children or 200 adults die each year in Canada from asthma related problems. If you have asthma, it is important to work with your doctor and health care team to understand your treatment plan and how to recognize flare-ups.
